I just can’t get excited about the LIV product. I’ve watched a couple of times, and lasted a couple of minutes at best. The broadcast just feels like fake reality TV. Heavily produced and players carefully told what to say and how to act away from competition. The graphics are distracting and the sound effect of the ball going in the hole is just plain awful. It can’t decide if it’s an individual or team sport. The team names are just cringeworthy. One thing I love about playing and watching golf is the quiet time, so the music on course is a straight up NO for me. Sure it’s gaining traction and probably isn’t going away, but I think you have to pick a format to watch and follow, and for me, LIV will never be that format.
I do think that embedding a youtuber/influencer in each team could greatly help reaching a younger and bigger audience. Imagine that you could root also for a Rick, Peter, Grant or Garret in a team. A pro-Am vibe in the team element could be a lot of fun!
Liv tournament in Mexico had more spectators than when the PGA tour was there , it’s a fantastic product and golf definitely needs this , Liv is for all ages and sponsors are guaranteed 54 players each week , really don’t think you understand the concept and understand how golf was going stale , Liv golfers don’t want the PGA tour and very soon you will see the majors get Liv golfers on board, speak to people who know golf and know these tours
I agree with the commentary being bad. There's one guy always taking shots at the tour and it seems tacky. Also I'd expect way more fans for the players they're bringing in. Well see what happens on sunday! If its free on youtube I'll watch it everytime lol
I like the Team element and idea, but not necessarily in its current form. My favorite thing about the Ryder and President cups is the teams with varying formats. Really brings team selection for each format into play. Would love to see more of this. Still have 10 or so normal tournaments but add 2-4 team tournaments mixed in each year
I've found myself watching more LIV golf than PGA Tour recently, but mostly just tune in for the Majors and a few other big tournies (Kapalua, Players, Arnie, Jack, etc). I agree with almost everything you've said. My thoughts, in addition to what you have said. 1. Rather than changing the Shotgun start, have 2 or 4 more groups than there are holes for them to play. During the shotgun start, 2 groups wait at 1 and 2 groups wait at 10. This gives players 1 or 2 mid-round breaks. Then on the final day, run 3 waiting off 1 so all of the leaders (4 groups) can finish on 18. 2. Have some sort of a Team playoff for the top 3 teams from the Tournament. It doesn't even have to be regular stroke play. Could be points for long drive, closest to the pin, and fewest putts in a putting contest. Or something like that. I could be a different challenge for every tournament. Knockout or Skins or anything could be cool.
I watched the final, well done to the guys for wanting to get it finished and playing in the dark, the reality is 29k live viewers is terrible, Good Good got 4 times that number, that being said I enjoyed the golf, but I really cannot get on with the graphics, they are just too distracting, take up way too much screen space. I liked Guys idea of singles first 2 days and team on day 3, or make it 4 days, the team stuff doesn't work when they are not playing together as a team.
The LIV fighting is all over the internet. And yet I’ve never met anyone in real life who watches golf who cares as much as people online make it to be.
Agreed with a lot of points on Liv! I just have to watch it now to see my favourite golfers play. However, tad hypocritical that you said they dont show after shot reactions and then moan when they televise an after shot reaction of Rahm swearing!
I watched Wyndham Clark shoot a 60 last weekend and was glued to it seeing if he’d shoot 59. I think that’s tour agnostic. Idc where they’re playing, show me good golf.
LIV is like all American sports. You can suck and stay in the league. No reason to get better as a player. PGA is like relegation. Performance based play. If you can’t play you are not playing. If you score the lowest you play the weekend. LIV players have contracts and get a paycheck then winnings are a bonus. I see that LIV players are suffering from playing less and no real reason to practice.
PGA has some awesome young players that could play and win at LIV. These no name talents are amazing. I would love to see more DP world tour players, I’m sure they have some fantastic talents.
Never listened to Rick shields before and you can hear the animosity they both have towards LIV. They hate the team format but that in my opinion is a great element and makes LIV more interesting due to guys not giving up because they may not win the individual event but have a chance at helping their team standings.
I'm 50 but spend time around younger people as everyone does and obviously there are tons of them on social media. They swear a ton in their daily lives so I don't think hearing Rahm would be a turn off. I think if anything it makes it cool and less stuffy. Would love to see younger people weigh in on that.
I think the team aspect will mean more as years pass by. In college golf does it matter more if John Daly Jr. is medalist or if Arkansas are national champions?
I'd much rather see the Orioles win the World Series than Adley Rutschman win MVP because the team matters most… so why can't that be the case in LIV?
Be clear on who owns it and the term “sports washing” before focusing on whether it’s entertaining. There are things that SHOULD be more important. It’s huge money from oil profits invested in PR exercises.

You nitpick about a product that is 2yrs in the making and you even make light of niemans 59 which is rare on the pga tour. The names on Liv made pebble beach look like the Koran ferry.
Only 54 players in the world play this format. Tough to wrap my head around LIV players getting world ranking points when the format is just so different than 99.99% of the rest of the professional golfing world. Just feels more like a big money exhibition event at the moment.

Can the LIV players qualify for the US Open and The Open through normal qualifying? If so, does that not almost completely eliminate the opportunity of the everyday amateur to qualify? Isn't tht the entire point of those competitions?
I get its your opinion and that's ok, but the negativity surrounding LIV is still echoed in your sentiments. Every positive spin had a negative undertone to it. Its a tad disappointing. The difference watching LIV and the PGAT are worlds apart. The DPWT seems to be the premium coverage to watch these days. They are unbias, they show most players and call it for what it is. The PGAT is soooooooo boring to watch. LIV is lifting in its popularity.

I’ve been a long time listener of the show Rick, and enjoyed pretty much everything you’ve done until now. I don’t like this video. I think this is an opinion that should’ve been kept to yourself. You’ve had players like Bryson who play for LIV who have done videos with you and helped you get SO MUCH attention and views and make your YouTube channel unbelievably successful. Bryson and other LIV players that have came on your channel work really hard to try and promote the tour and grow their audience. I think you should’ve showed more loyalty to the people who have helped you get to where you are in life by not slandering the company they work for and are working really hard to help grow.
