How many times have you seen a pro move his ball without a rules official by his side?

Omg. If one of the world's top players cannot be arsed to keep up with the rules of the game he makes a living from, it's absolutely pathetic. There were not many changes in 2023, surely the caddies would also be studying them. Beggars belief.

Listening to comments like walkman and the Rocketrob who both have excellent points here….the low amateur trying to qualify for a big tournament…if he/she gets this situation which is quite common and they don't have the luxury of an official to oversea the drop is correct according to recent ammended rules. The game of golf is complex and complex scenarios arise but why dont the ruling bodies produce a simplified 30 page max rulebook which is universal in every country and pros and amateurs alike have to pass 80% test to ensure they know the rules when they apply the correct rule of golf on the golf course. If McLRoy signed for an incorrect score cos he got the rule wrong, isnt he disaualified? Or have they changed that as well following Tiger's debarcle at the 2013 Masters? Modern golf in a complete mess!!! Sort this out governing bodies!!!!

He's a legend so he will and can recover. Us amateur's would not be able to sleep that night if we did the same, why we aren't Pro's – it's all mental.

This video is the reason Rory will never win the Masters. Poor 3 putt from 25ft, can't forget so drives into trouble on next hole, forgets the rule so turns an already bad bogey on a par 5 into a triple bogey and de-greens a putt on the next hole and another bogey, he cannot forget, yeah all players have and can do the same but Rory does it more, there's a bounce back ability stat, birdie following bogey, if there was a bogey bogey stat Rory would be near the top compared with other top50 players. On the two psr5s on his first 9 he hit 2 great shots in just short in the rough, the first chip he hit 15ft past to a pin towards the back missed the putt and on the other still thinking about the other chip chipped it 8ft short to a pin towards the front, cannot forget.. To the Masters he's tried everything from More practice more rounds to less practice less rounds, turning up early turning up late, more media less/no media, practice on his own practice with friends, less tournaments coming in, more tournaments coming in, nothing works WHY!!! His brain, mentally, his talent will always get him in contention but his brain will stop him, too many scars and the history that's on the line.. Will he win another Major YES if it's by 4 or 5 because of his talent and the lead is that big his brain cannot fuck him up, by 1 stroke I doubt it.. I hope he does as I've been watching him for 15yrs so I understand him on the course, I know what's gonna happen before it happens, like what happened yesterday, not forgetting the rule but the bad drive, bogey bogey, Dubai International, I didn't expect him to 3 putt from 3ft but I damn sure knew he was hitting that drive in the water on the 18th to gift Tommy the win with a birdie.. Brain transplant = Green jacket.. That obviously ain't happening so no green jacket for Rory.. Many more titles and will be world no1 multiple times and maybe a runaway major or 2 because of his talent… Hope I'm wrong about Masters but I know I'm not..

His 3rd quad bogey in last 3 Tournaments, the 1st one in Dubai he pulled off quad Bogey, here. I am sure techniclly Rory is the best player of last 10 years its only his mentallity…its not by any stretch of imagination meant to have LIV vs PGA beef, but Rahm's mentallity is something else and I don't think he techniclly is as good as Rory. But Rahm 4-putted first hole in Augusta and when asked about he simply said I wasn't woried, the putts felt good they just didn't go in. And he already backed that up in 1st round before asked about. Also just watched Bryan Bros, they played 9 with Jon, his mindset is what makes him so mentally tough.

Wow, kinda peculiar while he's doing his best to be honest in his drop, he gets penalized for a rule that I'm sure none of us know and considering the latest batch of "make it easy for the players" rules, it's a farce. Yet you've got players, both on the PGA and LPGA tours, will be "throwing" their drops so the ball has to bounce too far, without penalty, and then they're allowed to place it at a spot of their choosing. It's now become a "skillset" to create a drop that isn't, in any interpretation of the word, a "drop."

Seems like the Golf Channcel could actually cover the rule change right? Maybe a segment of here was the rule before '19. Here was the rule change in '19, here was the rule change in '23. Does it not make sense to cover the rule when you're talking about a two stroke penalty from a rules change? Come on Golf Channel

I am a rules official and have had some problems with this rule in the past. Several players have asked me in fact whether they could drop right or left of the line. Rule 19.2b never directly says you have to drop directly on the line only that the ball be dropped "behind the spot of the original ball, keeping the spot of the original ball between the hole and spot where the ball is dropped. ….' and that this creates a relief area that is one club length in either direction" (in case the ball rolls a bit). Diagram 19.2 in the rules shows a 1 club length relief area. I think this rule as written and the diagram confuse players because it suggests you can drop 1 club length right of left when you go back on the line. Why doesn't rule say you have to "drop on the line" rather than on the spot? /s/ Todd Myers

Same old Rory…starts season with win in Dubai but comes to the states against the best fields and tougher courses and he gets found out!!There's no way in a million years he wins the masters.. hasn't got the mental toughness to win at Augusta.Scottie proving once again he's the top man in golf…so consistent and turns up in the big tournaments!!I've said it for years… until Rory gets a stronger caddy who can give him a kick up the backside now and again…he ain't winning any more majors..it's all to comfortable with his best mate on the bag…u think he's giving Rory a piece of his mind now and then?I don't think so!!

A player is responsible for knowing the rules. I find it hard to believe that the top players don't keep up with the new rules especially knowing the penalties could cost you the tournament!

On a separate issue I do not agree with the current dress code allowed in golf now. They are trying to modernise it and appeal to the younger golfer but for me golf is about tradition and etiquette which today is lost. A lot of people nowadays have no consideration for other golfers when out on the course and also do not know basic decorum when playing. I do not think a hoodie is appropriate but good old Nike trying to be different and because of the money they generate and put into golf it’s allowed. I’m not trying to sound like an old fart even though I am but I just think the history of golf is being lost for a more modern take
