Rory should NOT!!!! have been entitled to any relief from the ball being near the green like it was. His ball looked like it was clearly in the rough so why is he entitled to any relief. I would 've played that ball as it lyed.

have local rules when it is 10 degrees celsius does not make sense at all, they are pro's. it is a mistake from the pga and rory takes the benefit of it like every pro should do.

The stupid thing is the PGA allowing a club length relief on preferred lies. That is ridiculous.

It really bugs me when players take advantage of the rules. Pretty nervy to even ask for relief for that ball in the greenside rough. 👎🏼

We call it Rory rules. Ever since US Open. Whatever he wants he gets. Move it closer to hole? Sure why not

Call me a pedant but Rory did NOT take Embedded Ball relief (Rule 16.3) on the plugged fairway lie. He PLACED the ball under Preferred Lies (Model Local Rule E-3). Embedded Ball relief would require him to DROP the ball. He did the same by the green, after first confirming that part of the ball was in contact with the fairway, where the MLR applies.

Removing the ball from the turf is illegal. We face it all the time in the NE You have to hit it where it lies. Cheater! Sometimes for us it's so bad the ball is under the turf and you can't find it. Lost ball and drop penalty applies. One time my ball was embedded below turf on a drive which hit the incline of a sand trap turf and was 6 inches deep and I had to destroy the course to hit the ball. I took 4 swings to free the ball from the turf. This is the right way to score.

Preferred lies yet we still jave to hit out of divots, which should be considered ground under repair. Golf rules are asinine.

When I am in those situations I prefer not to give myself any advantage if possible – just make the drop/placement fair and as close to the point as I can – my preference is to “meet the challenge square on” & take my medicine when I get a bad lie – otherwise I don’t feel good about wimping out – maybe that is what Rory is doing here? He wants to keep the difficulty rating high to keep it interesting?

There are enough officials and other players on the course that no player should ever have to take a penalty for a rules infraction. If another player or an official sees you drop incorrectly and doesn't say anything it should just be allowed. The rules of golf are often unfair and make no sense.

What is it with these stupid hoodies…? I mean, it makes zero sense, but when you gotta move something off the shelf; just throw it on a pga tour player. At least put the hood on when you're putting, and exalt in its straightening way it aligns your nostrils, so we sense some practicality, and throw on those clinching trousers that are so anklet inducing couture.

I golf a lot by myself. When the ball lands and plugs, completely embedded into soft mushy fairway, I just pull the ball out, wipe it off and place next to where the plug hole is and swing away. Basically like it never plugged to begin with.

thats a good question.. seems like everyone is confused about this ruling.. a lot of golfers have this issue all the time, our ball is leaning on the rough but touching the frindge, im sure most of us play it as it lies, if you have been golfing for a long time, you know we all played it as it lies. is this a new rule we are alow'd to get a free drop? is this "preffered lie" depend on the golf course? a local rule? PGA please explain this rule, a lot of golf courses are cut like this also. what is the difference from this lie vs a ball in someones divot? why was he able to place but not have to drop from the knee?

Because of this another rule, IF BALL IS FAIRWAY BURIED, MAY BE REMOVED AND PLACED ONE BALL LEFT, RIGHT OR BEHIND HOLE. OUT OF FAIRWAY BURIED TO BE PLAYED AS SITS OR 1 STROKE PENALTY AND PLACED AS ABOVE.
